PCL Tear
A tear of the posterior cruciate ligament (PCL), a ligament in the back of the knee. It is less common than an ACL tear.
Common Symptoms
- Mild to moderate pain in the back of the knee
- Swelling that occurs rapidly
- Knee instability, feeling like it might "give out"
- Difficulty walking or bearing weight
Potential Causes
- A direct blow to the front of the knee (e.g., hitting the dashboard in a car accident)
- Falling on a bent knee
- Twisting or hyperextension injuries
Treatment Options
Non-surgical treatment with bracing and physical therapy for most tears
Surgical reconstruction for severe instability or combined injuries
